How the Spray Works

Mixing Happens Inside the Gun

There is no bucket, no stir stick, and no pot life. The resin and iso sides travel down a heated hose in separate lines and only meet in the gun's mix chamber, where they collide head-on at roughly 2,000 PSI and 160°F. That collision — impingement — is the mixing. It is complete, it is instantaneous, and it happens a few inches before the material leaves the tip.

Two practical consequences follow. First, nothing sets up in your equipment between parts, so an operator can put the gun down mid-job and pick it back up. Second, the mix ratio is held mechanically by the proportioner rather than by whoever is holding the paddle, which is why the film you spray on the last panel has the same physical properties as the film on the first.

Because the system is 100% solids, no carrier evaporates on the way to the substrate. Everything that leaves the tip stays on the part. Wet mils and dry mils are the same number.

Atomization, Wet Edge, and Film Continuity

Atomization is what buys you reach. The fan leaving the tip is a population of fine droplets with momentum, not a wiped-on layer. Droplets travel into the recess behind a flange, land on the underside of a lap joint, and coat the far side of a bolt head. A bristle can only go where you can push it; a droplet goes where the air takes it.

Wet edge is what turns those individual droplets into a membrane. Each pass overlaps the previous one while the last one is still inside its reaction window, so adjacent passes chemically knit rather than stacking as separate layers. Done correctly, the finished coating has no internal interfaces anywhere on the part.

Edge retention is where sprayed polyurea quietly wins. Any wet, slow-curing film obeys surface tension: it levels, and levelling pulls material off sharp geometry. Cut edges, weld crowns, and corners end up with a fraction of the thickness the flat panel has — and those are precisely the places corrosion initiates. Polyurea gels in 3 to 6 seconds. It simply is not liquid long enough to run off the edge, so the corner carries full spec thickness.

Sag resistance comes from the same clock. Vertical walls, overheads, and the undersides of decks take a heavy single pass without curtaining or running. That is the difference between one 60-mil pass and four 15-mil coats with dry time between each.

Getting the Substrate Ready for a Spray Pass

Spraying does not lower the prep bar — if anything it raises it, because a membrane this well bonded will faithfully reproduce whatever is underneath it.

New or heavily corroded steel: SSPC-SP6 commercial blast to a 2–4 mil angular profile. The profile is what the 500+ PSI adhesion number is measured against.

Maintenance overspray of tight rust: SSPC-SP3 power-tool cleaning is workable where sound, tightly adhered oxide cannot be blasted off. The membrane seals it away from oxygen and moisture. Loose scale and flaking product must come off first — spray will bond beautifully to a chip that is about to fall off, and leave with it.

Salt service: verify soluble chlorides below 7 µg/cm². Salt under any coating draws moisture through it osmotically and blisters the film from behind.

Concrete and wood: both spray well with 7001 primer first. Profile concrete to CSP 3–5 and check moisture vapor emission. Wood must be dry and free of loose fiber.

Which Product Goes in the Gun

OR93BL — the standing answer when the job is corrosion and nothing else is grinding on the surface. Best cost per square foot in the line and the easiest of the three to pull heavy build with.

Flak Jacket 1 (FJ1) — step up when the sprayed surface will be walked on, loaded, or hit. Bed floors, deck plate, trailer floors, roof panels in hail country.

Flak Jacket Pro — for surfaces where the coating is the wear face. Bucket and chute liners, aggregate contact, dump bodies.

7001 Primer — not optional on concrete, wood, galvanized, TPO, EPDM, or a previously painted surface. It also stops the old coating bleeding color into the new membrane.
